Sacaton Creek Exploratory
March 3, 2024
Of all the days to forget our water shoes! After last week's disappointing low water hike through Purgatory Chasm, we didn't think we needed them.
But from the gently sloping plateau of Sacaton Mesa, we could see there was still plenty of snow in the Mogollons.
Snowmelt was exploding out of an acequia that runs for miles along Sacaton Road.
Remains of what may have been an old stage station along Sacaton Road.
Mule deer who seemed more curious than frightened posed for several photos.
As we climbed higher into the Mogollon Mountains, there were thrilling views of West Baldy (9785') and Sacaton Mountain (10,658').
California Tortoiseshell.
The first mile or so is a dreamy meander along a well-wooded old forest road.
Remains of a cabin built from hand-split cedar shakes.
Past the cabin the old road disappears and it's all bushwhacking and rock-hopping.
Another tantalizing view of West Baldy.
There were many small waterfalls along the creek ...
... and dozens of opportunities to soak our boots!
It was a great hike for a gorgeous spring day! We hope to return with proper footwear and continue farther up the canyon!
